How do you get the best dance and ballet photoshoot? by Magdalena Images in Denver, Colorado
What is the best way to take amazing dance photos? Follow these tips for the best results when taking ballet or dance photos. These were taken at the Magdalena Images Photo Studio in Denver, Colorado.
1) Find an amazing ballet dancer or any style of dancer first! A good place to look is use Instagram hashtags #ballerina #DenverDancer #bestballerina, #Denverballerina, cheerleaders and so on.
2) Make sure you have enough height in your backdrops or will spend a lot of time in post-editing. I used white and grey paper backdrops which are my favorite! With Photoshop AI and the Generative Fill feature, you can add easily and let your imagination flow!!! If you visit my Instagram reel and post, you’ll see an image that I created using an old painting I painted years ago of a nymph in the water.
3) I wanted both pretty and dramatic type photos, so I used both a two light setup and a 5 light setup. For the last photos in black and white, I stood above her and had a light overhead. I did get two catchlights when using two lights, but… I don’t personally care. For the close-ups and portraits I used a clam shell reflector and a light above her using a beauty dish.
4) If you would like to take photos of leaps and jetés, you need a large wall or a really talented artist who can get height without a lot of space. I would consider doing outdoors in good weather.
5) If you’d like classes on how to achieve these looks, just call as we do offer dance photography classes. Just call or email as we also rent studio space. Colder months are the best times to do these photoshots as most studio photographers have more time to focus on indoor photography.
